The Village is a great place to live: you’ll have the company of other Anglia Ruskin students, plus easy access to local shops and our Students’ Union lounge. It’s also just a short walk to Chelmsford’s picturesque riverside and the city centre.

A new School of Medicine is being built on our Chelmsford campus. We're working to minimise any disruption caused by the construction works, which will be taking place near the Student Village.

You can apply for accommodation in Chelmsford if:

  • you’re going to be a first year student
  • you’ve firmly accepted a conditional or unconditional offer from Anglia Ruskin to study in Chelmsford
  • you'll be studying a full-time course
  • you’ll be over 18 years old when the tenancy begins.

If you decide you'd like to live in our Student Village, you can apply online. Before you apply, we recommend checking current availability as well as our allocations policy. To help you choose a room that will suit you best, take a look at our Student Village map and property information.

Meanwhile, if you’re studying nursing, midwifery or operating department practice with us and your course includes a placement, you’ll be able to apply for hospital accommodation.

Living in Chelmsford Student Village

There are 510 single bedrooms in our Student Village, arranged into flats. Each flat contains three, five or six bedrooms.

All bedrooms have a single bed, desk, chair and wardrobe (you’ll need to bring your own bedding, towels and other personal items). Most rooms are en-suite, with their own shower and toilet (four of the three-bedroom flats are not en-suite, and have a shared bathroom).

Adapted rooms are available that are suitable for wheelchair users and have a call alarm system. We also have adapted rooms for students with visual or hearing impairments.

Internet (a 50MB wired and wireless service) is included in your rent. An optional TV service is available through our internet provider, at an extra cost. You’ll find TV aerial sockets in all rooms, but will need to bring your own TV and buy a TV licence.

You'll share a small kitchen (three-bed flats) or a kitchen/diner (five and six-bed flats). Your kitchen will have a fridge, freezer, cooker and microwave. It doesn’t include a kettle, toaster or cutlery. You could buy kitchen items after you arrive and share the cost with your housemates.

Our Student Village is within walking distance of Chelmsford city centre and its shops, bars and restaurants. It’s also near the train and bus stations. Our university library, campus shops, launderette, gym, cafes, classrooms and lecture theatres are right on your doorstep.

You’ll find bicycle storage in the Student Village along with limited car parking for Blue Badge holders or those studying certain courses. (You’ll need to apply for a car parking permit.)

Occupancy agreements

  • The length of your contract will vary depending which course you’re studying. For the standard academic year a tenancy will run from Wednesday 12 September 2018 to Saturday 22 June 2019 .
  • You can choose from an en-suite room in a three-bed flat; a non-en-suite room in a three-bed flat; or an en-suite room in a five- or six-bed flat. Rooms are priced according to size so some of the larger rooms without an en-suite in three-bed flats are more expensive.
  • Rent for 2018/19 for an en-suite room in a three-bed flat is £118 .51 per week or £4791.19 for the standard academic year.
  • Rent for 2018/19 for an en-suite room in a five or six-bed flat is £122.15 or £126.63 per week or £4938.35 or £5119.47 for the standard academic year.
  • Rent for 2018/19 for a non-en-suite room in a three-bed flat is from £ 118.51 - £126.23 per week or £4791.19 - £5119.47 for the standard academic year.
  • At the point you apply we'll ask you to pay £300 in advance rent to secure the room.
  • Due to the payment schedules, the deadline for paying the remaining balance of your first rent instalment varies: Trimester students will be required to pay the balance shortly before their tenancy agreement starts, and those studying a course which follows the standard academic year will need to pay the remaining balance shortly after they move in. The payment will work out as approximately three weeks' rent.
