What is Clearing?

This is your moment Untitled PageClearing provides an opportunity for you to apply directly to your chosen university and receive advice and guidance from them throughout the process. By waiting until you have your results you give yourself more time to make a decision. If you don’t quite have the grades you need you can also use Clearing to apply for a university degree starting this year.

Clearing runs from July, when the first results (BTEC) are published, through to September time. We have four campus locations Cambridge, Chelmsford, ARU London and Peterborough (Guild House) all of which have courses that you can apply for.

Finding a course

When Clearing starts, there will be a range of great courses available to UK and EU students wishing to apply for an undergraduate degree. In the meantime, take a look at our undergraduate page and and think about what you would like to study. Not everything will be available in Clearing, but now is a good time to do some research. When Clearing opens and you’re ready to apply, just follow our application process:

  • Have your UCAS personal number (if you have one) and exam results to hand 
  • Print a copy of your personal statement from your UCAS application 
  • Prepare any questions you’d like to ask us 
  • Call us on 01245 68 68 68 

If you want to take a gap year, please check with the enquiries team if they are accepting deferred entry applications. If not, you can still apply through Clearing next year.


You are eligible to apply through Clearing if:

  • You haven’t received any offers
  • You’ve declined all your offers or not responded by the due date
  • Your offers haven’t been confirmed because you haven’t met the conditions
  • You’ve declined a changed course, a changed date of entry and/or changed point of entry offer
  • You’ve applied for one course which has been declined/unsuccessful and you’ve paid the full application fee
  • UCAS received your application between 23-30 June

Our Clearing hotline is open from July. BTEC result-holders can call us at any time. After A Level results day; during the main Clearing dates we’ll have extended opening times.
