Paying for your accommodation

Untitled Page

Here’s a list of questions we’re asked about paying for university accommodation. If you have any other questions, please contact us.

How much does university accommodation cost?
You’ll find the exact costs of Cambridge halls and houses and Chelmsford Student Village on our website. Rent includes utility bills (up to a certain amount) and, in most accommodation, your internet connection.

Do I have to pay a deposit?
Some properties are managed by Anglia Ruskin and others by accommodation providers (our partners).

There’s no deposit for accommodation that we manage, but you’ll need to pay a £300 advanced rent payment at the point of application and the balance of the first rent instalment will be due shortly after your Tenancy Agreement starts (for those moving in in September). We manage Anastasia House, Collier Road shared houses, University shared houses, Peter Taylor House, Swinhoe Hall, and Student Village in Chelmsford.

If you have booked a room at any other accommodation, you may need to pay a deposit, application fee or other costs. See the Cambridge halls and houses cost comparison sheet for deposit and fee amount details.

How do I pay my rent?
For accommodation that we manage, you can make web payments. This should be set up automatically when you make your advanced rent payment. You’ll need to use a card that’s suitable for online transaction (ie, you don’t have to be present to sign). We manage Anastasia House, Collier Road shared houses, University shared houses, Peter Taylor House, Swinhoe Hall, and Student Village in Chelmsford.

If you can’t make web payments, contact our Finance Department to make special arrangements.

For accommodation that’s managed by our partners different payment methods will apply. The building managers will send you the offer of accommodation with details of when and how to pay. Our partners manage CB1, The Railyard, the YMCA, Sedley Court, and The Forum.

I’m an international student. How do I pay from overseas?
For accommodation that we manage, you can pay in the same way that you pay your tuition fees. We manage Anastasia House, Collier Road shared houses, University shared houses, Peter Taylor House, Swinhoe Hall, and Student Village in Chelmsford.

For accommodation that is managed by our partners, different payment methods will apply. The building managers will send you the offer of accommodation with details of when and how to pay. Our partners manage CB1, The Railyard, the YMCA, Sedley Court, and The Forum.

What happens if I can’t pay my rent for any reason?
If you fail to pay your rent, you may incur a late payment charge.

If you continually fail to pay your rent, you’ll be breaching your Occupancy Agreement, so you may be asked to leave and be contacted by debt collectors. If you have difficulties with paying your rent, please let us know as soon as possible.

What is included in my rent?
Your rent includes:

  • utilities (gas, electricity and water)
  • internet (although there is a one-off connection fee at CB1)
  • furniture – most rooms have a single bed, desk, chair, wardrobe and shelves
  • repairs and maintenance for fair wear and tear
  • buildings insurance
  • contents insurance (except Sedley Court, and the YMCA). Please check your student possessions insurance policy so you know what it covers, and how you can extend it if you need to. If you are living in accommodation managed by Anglia Ruskin, details of your policy are below
