On Saturday 10 February 2024, 15 members of ARU Taekwondo Club attended the BUCS Winter Championship held in St Mary’s University in Twickenham.

As a team we came away with eight Sparring medals and 5 Poomsae medals in both World Taekwondo and International Taekwondo Federation disciplines. ARU also ranked seventh out of all the universities entered.

Two of our sports scholars – Maximo Libid, studying BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science, and Shayanne Sarsoza, studying BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Therapy (pictured) – have also qualified to represent Team ARU at the upcoming EUSA European Universities Games in Hungary this summer.

Everyone enjoyed the competition atmosphere and supporting each other through their wins and losses. We’re still training hard ready for our last competition in March.

What would you say to someone to inspire them to follow in your sporty footsteps?

A lot of our members are first timers who have never done any type of martial arts before, so we always encourage them to have fun and try out something new. It also helps increase confidence in yourself as well as the physical aspects of fitness and new skills.
