Having trained as a GP, Simon is the medical leader for healthcare education across the Midlands and East of England for HEE and the national lead for Primary Care Education.
Simon is Director and Dean of Education and Quality (DEQ), Health Education England (HEE), Midlands and East and HEE SRO for Primary Care having been DEQ & Postgraduate Dean, Health Education East of England.
Simon leads for HEE on Primary and Community Care, is Chair of the UK Medical and Dental Recruitment Programme Board and the GP Workforce 2020 Programme Board, is Chairman of the RCGP Committee on Medical Ethics and the University of Cambridge/ East of England Military Education Committee. Simon trained as a GP in Northampton and was a GP Partner and salaried GP at King Edward Road Surgery, Northampton. His research interests are selection methodology, “value-added” in medical education and quality of education, training and care and health outcomes and performance.
Simon is also Vice-Chair of Trustees of the Astrea Multi Academy Trust.
After initial research into effective selection into GP training Simon became interested in satisfaction with and the quality of education. He has used the value add methodology applied in mainstream education to consider medical education. His key current research is seeking to demonstrate a link between the quality of education and learner satisfaction with this to quality of care provision and ultimately, he hopes, to health outcomes.
Simon teaches in the UK and internationally on healthcare and education leadership, quality of care and primary care education. He also teaches on compassion in medicine.
