Louise is an experienced educator at Secondary level, with particular interests in Science education and classroom-based research.

Background

After gaining a BSc in Applied Microbiology, Louise worked as a medical researcher at St George’s Hospital Medical School (University of London). She spent five years investigating immune system responses to the coat protein of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, publishing her research in the Journal of Immunological Methods and AIDS.

For eighteen years Louise taught in comprehensive and grammar, single-sex and co-educational secondary schools in Essex. During her teaching career Louise was a subject leader, co-ordinator of school-based initial teacher training and a STEM lead practitioner.

Since joining ARU as a Senior Lecturer, she has taught on the BA Primary Education and MA Education courses, and previously led on the MA Education.

Research interests

  • The impact of implicit theories of intelligence on able students’ engagement with challenging tasks in the science classroom.
  • Developing the role of the teacher-researcher.
  • STEM education and CPD for teachers.
  • Promoting students’ voices in schools.

Louise’s research interests have evolved from her experience as a classroom teacher and STEM lead practitioner.

Her doctoral thesis was entitled ‘How Do Able Male Students’ Implicit Theories of Intelligence Impact On Their Engagement With Challenging Tasks? An exploratory case study’.
