Anglia Ruskin University students triumph in first-ever annual battle with UEL
More than 250 Anglia Ruskin students, plus mascot Ruskin the Rhino, travelled to east London to take part in 21 sporting fixtures covering 14 different sports, including football, rowing and netball, against UEL.
Anglia Ruskin's new Vice Chancellor, Professor Iain Martin, watched on as the teams spent much of the day neck-and-neck before a 9-6 victory in the American Football match ensured the trophy was heading out of the capital with the Rhinos, who won the overall competition 13-8.
The competition gave the students a chance to compete at venues across East London, including Lee Valley Park, a venue used in the London 2012 Olympics for tennis and hockey. Anglia Ruskin’s teams were captained by Sonia Awour and Enrico Picone.
Emily Millar, Student Sport Engagement Officer, said:
“It was a fantastic day for everyone playing and supporting. Having a lot of supporters, including Professor Martin, cheering from the sidelines was also a real boost for the students taking part.
“We are so proud of our students for winning the Challenge Cup, they put on a spectacular performance against UEL when it mattered most. Bring on 2017!”
