Judoka finishes third in the European Universities Judo Championship 2015

Anglia Ruskin University sports scholar Mateja Glusac took home a bronze medal from the European Universities Judo Championships, which took place in Reims, France, over the weekend.

After losing his first fight of the competition to Valentin Jourdan of National Institute of Applied Sciences Lyon, Mateja, 21, went on to win his remaining three fights to take home the bronze medal.

Mateja beat Maxime Lambert of German Sports University Cologne by Ippon in his second fight, and then Daniel Martinez of University of Barcelona by Ippon in his third fight to set up the meeting with Maxence Montet of Universite Paris I in the fight for the bronze medal. Mateja also won this fight by Ippon.

The Computer Science student, who is in his second year at Anglia Ruskin, had qualified for the tournament by winning gold in his weight category at the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) Championships earlier in the year.

Mateja, originally from Belgrade but studying in Cambridge, said:

"This event has been a focus of mine for many months, so to fight for Anglia Ruskin at this level and to take home a medal feels great. I would have preferred it to be gold of course, but I will return to training and keep that as a goal for next time."
