ARU clinician honoured for contribution to optometry

Dr Jasleen Jolly was awarded a Fellowship by the College of Optometrists
An academic at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has been recognised by the UK’s professional body for optometry for her outstanding contribution to the field of eye research.
Dr Jasleen Jolly, Associate Professor at ARU’s Vision and Eye Research Institute (VERI), was honoured with the title of Fellow of the College of Optometrists at a recent ceremony.
Dr Jolly’s expertise is around genetic eye disease and low vision from a number of different aspects. Her work combines disciplines including optometry, ophthalmology, neuroscience and psychology in order to improve patient care and understanding of disease.
Her recent work involves setting national and international guidelines for clinical trials and care in vision research, and initiatives that champion equity, diversity and inclusion.
Dr Jolly’s recent papers include highlighting a lack of research into sight loss among people of working age, and the impact of diagnosis on eye disease patients. In January, a guideline for a new test by The International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision will be introduced, led by Dr Jolly.
Dr Jolly, who was one of only four individuals awarded a Fellowship by Portfolio by the College of Optometrists, said:
“It is fantastic to be recognised for my work to push the boundaries of what we as optometrists do and can contribute to other fields, including ophthalmology, neurology and neuroscience.
“Being a clinical academic is new territory for optometrists and our skills and knowledge are being increasingly recognised as critical for successful clinical trials. This endorsement is wonderful for myself and others looking to expand the field of optometry.”
