Course highlights

  • Study while you work, bridging theory with practice seamlessly in the dynamic world of civil engineering
  • Sharpen your technical and mathematical skills to confidently tackle complex engineering challenges head-on
  • Develop resource management expertise to optimise project efficiency, considering costs, timelines, and quality standards

As an apprentice working in the industry, you’ll be in a unique position to put theory into practice on a regular basis. This course will develop your technical and mathematical skills and knowledge, enabling you to propose and deliver effective civil engineering solutions. This is practiced by producing engineering plans and documents, and by evaluating data and technical information using a range of appropriate engineering methods and processes.

You’ll be able to effectively identify, organise and use resources within civil engineering projects considering costs, timescales, quality and health and safety. You'll also develop an understanding of the importance of complying with environmental policies and legislation, and be able to evaluate the impact of these on civil engineering projects.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to improve your written and oral communication skills and work effectively in a project team, as communication is a key skill for civil engineers.

Ideal for working professionals seeking to advance in civil engineering, this apprenticeship offers a blend of academic insights and hands-on application. The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Engineering Technician review marks the culmination of this apprenticeship, offering the opportunity to gain professional qualification upon completion.

Key facts

An apprenticeship is a job with training, combining practical experience with academic learning.

At least 20% of your contracted working hours will be classed as 'off-the-job'. This time will be dedicated to developing the knowledge and skills needed to meet the requirements of the apprenticeship, and therefore is not part of your usual work duties.

The off-the-job learning is gained through university-led learning sessions and activities, and practical learning experiences in your usual work setting.

Delivery will be across three trimesters, with apprentices coming to the ARU Peterborough campus one day a week during the 12-week trimesters.

Assessment

Assessment for this course will use a variety of techniques to develop and assess your technical knowledge and skills as well as professional skills, such as communication and teamwork.

Professionally relevant assessments will be used to help you experience the types of tasks civil engineers undertake in the workplace. Examinations will assess your comprehension of more theoretical and technical aspects. You’ll receive structured, insightful feedback throughout your course.

The End Point Assessment (EPA) for this apprenticeship is the ICE Engineering Technician review, and your final two trimesters will focus on preparing you for this.
