Stefan is a Lecturer and a Member of the Senate at Anglia Ruskin University. Educated in Germany and the United Kingdom, he is a dialectician working on international law, legal theory and political philosophy. Stefan explores intensively legitimacy issues arising in the theory and practice of transnational commercial law, public international law, sports law as well as international commercial and investor-state arbitration.
Upon completing with distinction a 5-year degree as Magister Artium in Philosophy, Law and Greek Philology at the Friedrich-Schiller University (Jena), Stefan started teaching law at King’s College London’s School of Law. Prior to joining ARU, Stefan spent three years as visiting scholar and research assistant at the University of Cambridge, Yale University and the Max-Planck Institute for Comparative and Private International Law in Hamburg. In his work Stefan is particularly interested in critical and historical approaches to international legal thought. Combining teaching and research experiences in both its commercial and public manifestations, his academic work encompasses structural analyses of legitimacy concerns in international investment law, sports law, international criminal law and transnational commercial law. Stefan also has a strong background in the philosophy of German Idealism and explores the importance of critical theories and dialectical methods in the understanding of the epistemic conditions of law in general and legal conflicts in particular.
