Top tips to help you breeze through results day and Clearing. Also handy for everything that comes next - like, you know, life. Give them a try!

Breathe

As obvious as it sounds, remembering to breathe fully is one of the most effective ways to combat stress. There are a number of free mindfulness apps that help you get the hang of your breathing such as Headspace and Calm. Give them a whirl and see how much better breathing techniques can make you feel.

Get active

Studies show that a little exercise can go a long way in reducing stress. This is because an increase in heart rate releases endorphins – the happy hormone – into the body. Endorphins are wonderful things. They act as a natural painkiller, reduce anxiety and even aid with sleep. Try going for a light jog somewhere scenic in times of stress, or if running isn’t your thing, stretching and yoga will help too.

Compartmentalisation

This can be a real art form when done right. It’s breaking down big, seemingly insurmountable tasks into smaller, more manageable ones. Psychologically, this can have a huge impact on your stress levels. Start simple; make lists planning out your day task by task. If you wake up thinking 'today I need to sort out the next three years of my life' you’ll find it hard to know where to start. Instead, wake up thinking 'today I will enquire about three courses I like the look of.' That’s compartmentalisation!

Food is fuel

While it might be tempting to put everything off and celebrate/commiserate exam results with some lovely pints, it’s important to stay focussed during Clearing. Eating and drinking the right things makes for a healthy body, which as the old adage goes, makes for a healthy mind. Some superfoods have known stress relieving qualities, like leafy green vegetables, fish, nuts and seeds, blueberries, avocados and even dark chocolate!

Talk

Clearing is the best time for you to ask the people around you for advice. It’s a time of great change, but there are people whose job it is to give you advice on your next move. Take our admissions team for example. They can be reached by phone, email and even live chat throughout Clearing to guide you through it. You’re not alone, so speak up, voice your concerns and make informed decisions with people who really know their stuff.

Embrace it

Being proactive at times of high stress means taking control. During Clearing, it’s imperative that you don’t dwell on unexpected results, but instead look forward and embrace the challenge ahead. You don’t have to find a course through Clearing, you get to find a course through Clearing – maybe one you hadn’t even thought about before. It’s the first step in a new adventure and you are in control. Get planning!

You can apply for uni through Clearing if

  • you didn’t apply before the UCAS deadline
  • your grades are different to what you expected
  • you’ve only just decided to go to uni
  • you’ve changed your mind about what or where you want to study since you originally applied.
