The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) has alerted its community to calls planned for Creative R&D Partnerships and Policy and Evidence Centre.

Creative R&D Partnerships

Opens late September 2017, intention to submit due late October 2017.

Up to eight partnerships will be created, each led by a higher education institution, bringing together academia, businesses from the creative industry, and other stakeholders. AHRC is offering up to two-thirds funding for each partnership for 54 months (October 2018–March 2023), with the remaining money to be found as matched funding. The partnerships are expected to cost between £6 and 9 million, with AHRC therefore contributing £4-6 million.

Policy and Evidence Centre

Opens late October 2017, intention to submit due late November 2017.

The policy and evidence centre (PEC) will become an independent analysis body for the creative industries, providing data and reports for businesses and policy makers. AHRC is offering up to three-quarters funding for the centre for 57 months (July 2018–March 2023), with the remaining money to be found as matched funding. The centre is expected to cost at least £8 million, with AHRC providing £6 million.

Together, these opportunities represent the Council's Creative Industries Clusters Programme. This major effort has several aspects, and represents a new way for researchers to work across traditional boundaries between industry, research and policy. The aims of the Programme are to:

  • "Enhance creative clusters by boosting HEI-creative industries R&D infrastructure
  • Design and implement particular interventions and R&D programmes that address the challenges identified by the Partnership with reference to issues identified in the ‘Background’ section [of the document available online]
  • Enable micro-businesses, SMEs and large enterprises to partner with academic researchers to develop new products, services and experiences; allowing companies to access specialist knowledge or expertise provided by universities and universities to collaborate with leading-edge commercial enterprises.
  • Provide individuals and teams with high-level skills needed to thrive in the creative industries, and establish models for their continuing development and delivery.
  • Provide impetus to local and regional economies, and step-up the growth and impact of the creative industries in those places. Support the creation of strong international links and partnerships for UK businesses.
  • Support the sector, policymakers and researchers by improving the quality and accessibility of rich-data sources and independent analysis to improve understanding of the creative industries with a view to improving the effectiveness of future public interventions in the field."
