BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Physical Education
3 July 2017
My name is Daniel and I've been volunteering as a Sports Coach Assistant at Cambridge United Youth and Community Trust throughout my degree.
I've recently completed my third and final year on Anglia Ruskin's Sports Coaching and Physical Education degree course.
I have been volunteering as a Sports Coach Assistant at Cambridge United Youth and Community Trust throughout my degree. This role allows me to participate during lunchtime, after-school and holiday sessions. I've had first-hand experiences of working with young children and meeting coaches. The activities I helped with include football, rugby and other sports played for physical exercise. I had a chance to lead a number of these sessions.
Cambridge United Community Trust have three key themes; education, health and inclusion. Their values include respect, empowerment and inspiration. Their speciality lies in football however they use a range of sporting activities to teach these goals and values. They seek to inspire people in sport and through this participation become healthier and motivated.
The sports coach volunteering role benefits the children at the trust as well as giving myself direct experience before taking future paid roles. Skills I learnt during this voluntary role include leadership, communication, and management, organisational and planning skills. These opportunities gave me, as a student volunteer, valuable expertise needed in professional job roles.
The coach assistant role provides on the spot, first-hand experiences of leading children, it allows students to meet the different needs of individual personalities of the children attending the Trust.
I aspire to become a professional sporting coach; now, with my recent degree qualification and experiences I can continue to achieve this goal. The Anglia Ruskin Volunteer Service has directly benefitted my personal development through the partnerships the University has with local organisations such as Cambridge United Youth and Community Trust.
I would definitely recommend using the volunteer service while studying, the service was friendly and supportive throughout. Volunteering with Cambridge United Youth and Community Trust has directly helped with my career path and I strongly encourage other students to use the volunteer service available at Anglia Ruskin University.
