The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have regular, targeted calls, alongside their less-targeted responsive mode funding mechanisms.
Be on the lookout for opportunities to apply for funds from these major public funders, especially when they seek to engage inter-, multi-, and cross-disciplinary scientists.
1) Follow-on funding
Opens: 25 January 2017
Closes: 15 March 2017, 4pm
This scheme aims to bring fundamental research another step closer to market and impact. The PI will be aiming to use previous BBSRC-funded work as the basis for a proof-of-concept style grant, demonstrating a need for the commercialisation (or other exploitation) of the results. While you may not have the previous BBSRC grant yourself, consider if you're the ideal collaborator to demonstrate the need for this new technology. Time to build those consortia!
2) Global Food Security - Policy Lab
Apply by: 10 February 2017, 4pm
Workshop for successful applicants: 27-29 March 2017
The Global Food Security (GFS) programme will hold a workshop in March. Teams will compete for funds to write a policy report on behalf of the high-profile GFS programme. the workshop will bring together new consortia made up of social scientists, economists, food scientists, nutrition, ecosystem, and behavioural scientists. The theme for the event will be 'Multifunctional landscapes: providing food alongside other ecosystem services'.
1) EPSRC/Energy Systems Catapult whole energy systems scoping studies
Closing date: 19 January 2017, 4pm
Collaborative scoping studies around six themes in energy are the subject of this call, with awards of up to £60k (at 80%) available for each project. This funding will be used for activities such as workshops, bringing communities of academics together and addressing issues such as:
- energy systems modelling
- evaluation of regulatory frameworks
- how engery could be transacted differently.
The interdisciplinary aspects of this call are exciting, so do try and get involved!
