Anglia Ruskin University is once again getting ready to welcome people from all over the East of England to its Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses for a day of discussions and activities, which will help to reveal the many higher education opportunities available to them.

The forthcoming Open Day on Saturday 17 May will allow potential students from all over the East of England to find out more about undergraduate study and for the Cambridge campus event there will be a special focus on courses and career options available within the growing area of eye care.

There are many areas of study including Optometry, which is the profession concerned with the examination, diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders of vision; Ophthalmic Dispensing, which prepares students to become Dispensing Opticians; and Optical Management, for those students wishing to combine studies in ophthalmic dispensing with study in business, management and retail marketing.

The University is the largest provider of ophthalmic training, covering both Optometry and Ophthalmic dispensing in the East of England. It offers courses leading to professional qualifications recognised by the General Optical Council and the Association of British Dispensing Opticians.

Commenting on the developing interest in this area of study, Dr John Siderov, Head of the Department of Optometry and Ophthalmic Dispensing, said:

“The process of sight is one which occurs so easily and readily that it is not surprising that for many of us, we take it for granted. But the human eye is a complex and remarkable organ that is fascinating to study, and as the eye care sector grows so do the career opportunities available.”

“As you would expect in a progressive and modern University, the laboratory and clinical facilities available to students are exceptional. In addition, the department houses the Optometry Clinic, a superb facility that is open to the general public.”

Members of the University's teaching and administrative staff will be available offering information to help make informed decisions about Course structure and programme start dates.

The Faculties involved in the Open Day include Arts Law and Social Sciences, Science & Technology, the Ashcroft International Business School, Education and Faculty of Health and Social Care.

Anglia Ruskin University will be welcoming potential students, who are considering higher education or career development opportunities, and their families during the forthcoming Open Day.

Anglia Ruskin University Open Days generally attract 800-1000 prospective students to the campus plus members of their family and friends. There are four Open Days staged during the year. Each one is a key recruitment day for the University.

Those interested in attending one of the Open Days can pre-register online at or call 0845 271 3333 for more details on which courses are offered on which campus.
