Epidemiology of eye disease / Global Burden of Disease study

Professor Rupert Bourne

Current activities

  • To establish the global burden of visual impairment and blindness
  • To collaborate with 45 international partners on the systematic review of the data on all eye diseases (Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study) published between 1980 and 2008

Outcomes

  • Surveys of eye disease coordinated with international partners in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand and Greenland over the last few years have produced important data on the burden of eye disease in these populations. We have contributed towards the understanding of the burden of glaucoma worldwide through publications of surveys of eye disease in Thailand and Greenland. Specifically, the data has highlighted particular risk groups for eye disease and the visual impairment and blindness that these cause
  • The Global Burden of Disease Project involves a major systematic review of all population-based studies of eye disease undertaken since 1980 and seeks to estimate the current and historic burden of eye disease (and all other diseases) in the World

Grants

  • 2008: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ($25,000): for Global Burden of Disease Project
  • Brien Holden Vision Institute 2012 (£168,262)
