Build a talent pipeline of trained early career bioinformaticians with our innovative new Data Scientist Degree Apprenticeship.
Data Scientist Degree Apprenticeship: tackling the bioinformatics skills gap.
We’re proud to have developed, in collaboration with the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the UK’s first Data Scientist Degree Apprenticeship for the bioinformatics profession.
The emergence of big data and its use in biological research and discovery has led to a rapidly growing demand for talented professionals who can analyse and interpret biological data.
There is a well-defined shortage of trained bioinformaticians in genomics, pharma and clinical sectors, due to the limited number of direct education routes for this discipline.
Launching in September 2019, our groundbreaking degree apprenticeship offers a solution to address the skills gap, and provides a new route to recruiting and educating early talent in bioinformatics. Our work-based course will focus on the development of this unique skillset, bringing data science together with software engineering, computational biology and mathematics to provide the foundation for careers in this innovative and rapidly advancing profession. The apprenticeship is mapped to the Level 6 Data Scientist Degree Apprenticeship Standard.
We have a huge skills shortage in bioinfomaticians and ARU can translate some of our complex needs into an engaging curriculum. Our apprentices challenge our thinking, and they progress our science
Apprentices have a different mindset, they are focused on the application of what they learn. That's a benefit for employers because they get the doers, with the skills needed to move the field forward
In addition to prestigious lead partner the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, this exciting project is supported by Genomics England, Eagle Genomics, Global Gene Corp, Congenica, SciBite, Specific Technologies, GSK and Wellcome Genome Campus among others.
