BBC's Storyville with Mandy Chang

Mandy Chang and Dr Catherine Elliott in discussion on stage

StoryLab joined the Royal Television Society (RTS) East Centre to welcome Mandy Change – the new commissioning editor of the BBC’s premier international documentary strand, Storyville, to Anglia Ruskin University on 7 December 2017.

Mandy Chang shared useful perspectives on producing an engaging feature-length documentary for Storyville, offering exemplar insights from clips, including: Last Men in Aleppo, My Mother’s Lost Children and Weiner – Sexts, Scandals and Politics.

With hundreds of pitches received from first-time filmmakers on a regular basis, British broadcasting is notoriously competitive. But Chang shared that unlike them, she welcomed those that offered a unique angle, access and approach. Considering the audience was packed with filmmakers, both professional freelancers and students, this particularly resonated with attendees.

The event was chaired by Dr Catherine Elliot, a StoryLab affiliate researcher, course lecturer and distinguished filmmaker at ARU.
