Mildmay Sports Centre


The Mildmay Gym, located on campus offers a range of up-to-date equipment suiting a variety of exercise goals and experience levels (with free inductions for beginners). The handy location, opening hours and selection of equipment, make the gym a great place to achieve your fitness goals.

The gym is home to:

  • Cardiovascular machines - including treadmills, cross-trainers and spinning bikes.
  • Resistance machines - including leg-press, lat-pull and cable machine.
  • A free weight zone - featuring a half-rack, Olympic bar and dumbbells ranging from 1kg-35kg.
  • Low-impact area – for stretching and mat-based exercises.

Functional Training Area

The Mildmay Functional Training Area is a part-time functional training zone located in courts 3 and 4 of the Mildmay Sports hall. It offers a variety of functional training equipment, including: a battle rope, plyometric box, suspension trainer, wall balls and more! Access is included in all gym memberships – just sign in at reception. Opening hours are dependent on sports hall availability, please check our dedicated Facebook page for the latest opening times.

Sports hall

Four-court badminton court sports hall, suitable for a number of sports including badminton, indoor football, basketball and indoor cricket. Changing and shower facilities are also available. To check availability or to make a booking, speak to Mildmay Sports Centre reception, call on 01245 684321 or you can book online.

Day-lockers, changing rooms and shower cubicles are all available (including accessible facilities)

Parking is restricted to permit holders only on campus from 7am-4.30pm weekdays, with the exception of Blue Badge holders. Parking after 4.30pm on weekdays, all weekend and on bank holidays is permitted and free of charge.

Riverside Ice and Leisure

Just a ten-minute walk from our Chelmsford campus, Riverside boasts a range of swimming facilities including a 33-metre, six-lane main pool and diving pit with one-metre, two-metre and five-metre boards. There's also a separate 20-metre learner pool and an outdoor pool which is open during the summer months. Have a look at our Swim and Run membership!

Chelmsford Sports and Athletic Centre

Run by Chelmsford City Council, offering first class indoor and outdoor athletics facilities so athletes can train all year round. The Centre offers a floodlit, eight-lane, synthetic all-weather 400m outdoor track with a full range of field event and indoor facilities including:

  • A six-lane 60m sprint straight
  • Long jump practice areas
  • Triple jump practice areas
  • High jump practice areas
  • Pole vault practice areas
  • Indoor throw cages that caters for discus and shot training.

Sawyers Gym

A separate dance studio on campus where a number of studio classes take place. Changing facilities are available. Have a look at our studio class timetable.

Table tennis tables

We have two outdoor table tennis tables in Chelmsford that are free for our students and staff to use. You'll find them next to Marconi and in front of the Student Village.

Equipment is provided at the tables and you can get extra bats or balls, if needed, from the iCentre.

Trim Trail

An outdoor exercise circuit, which you can start next to Mildmay Sports Centre and various other locations on campus.

Guidelines for use:

  • Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear when using the Trim Trail
  • Warm-up properly beforehand
  • Make sure you have plenty of water to stay well hydrated
  • Caution: during wet or icy weather the ground and equipment may become more slippery
  • Be aware of uneven ground surrounding the Trim Trail and the possibility of loose footing
