Background

Javaid is an active researcher in the field of Additive Manufacturing and has a wealth of experience in characterising and analysing varied materials for product development. He has designed and developed several processes capable of manufacturing polymers, metals and composites (metal/metal and plastic/metal) based on the techniques of additive manufacturing. Javaid’s current research focuses on interlacing existing manufacturing practices (subtractive, additive and hybrid) with advanced robotics for engineering applications.

Javaid was awarded a fully funded studentship for PhD studies from the Department of Engineering & Built Environment at Anglia Ruskin University. He designed a new additive manufacturing process to produce metal/composite parts and was awarded his doctorate degree in 2016. Javaid was also awarded merit scholarship during his MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering Science/Mechatronics at the University of Southampton. For his MSc project, he designed a novel mechanism to produce multiple material parts using a desktop-based 3D printer. Javaid was the recipient of Pakistan Government’s merit scholarship during his undergraduate studies in Mechatronics & Control Engineering at University of Engineering & Technology. His final year project was based on the design of a master-slave dexterous robotic hand.

  • Appointed as REF 2021 Co-Convener for UoA 12 (Engineering).
  • Won a KEEP+ project (funded by European Regional Development Fund: ERDF) as an academic lead, worth £85,600, to investigate mechanical characteristics and analyse dynamic stresses in FRP/GRP products for Dura Composites (2018-2019).
  • Won an Erasmus+ grant as a co-applicant titled GIENAHS (Grasping Innovation in Europe through a closer iNterAction between HEIs and SMEs), worth €999, 231, that focusses on bringing HEIs and SMEs together by employing innovative methodologies for research and development that include industrial PhDs and setting up observatories for research (2017-2020).
  • Co-investigator on a European research project titled GrowIn 4.0 (worth €3.6 Million) that deals with identifying barriers and developing frameworks/tools to encourage the uptake of Industry 4.0 in UK SMEs (2017-2020).
  • Technical Committee Member for MEAE (Mechanical Engineering & Aerospace Engineering) 2018 to review papers for the conference (held during June 23-25, 2018 at China University of Geosciences in Wuhan, China).
