Our Informatics, Computing and Electronics (ICE) research group aims to explore those areas of computer science and electronics that bridge the application interfaces between software and hardware.

Research under this theme is grouped into the following research areas:

IoT and Cloud Computing

Our IoT and Cloud Computing Research Area has a wide range of research interests including Internet of Things, smart environments, pervasive healthcare, Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and adaptive computational systems, advanced internet and mobile technologies.

Graphics, Image and Vision

Our Graphics, Image and Vision Research Area focuses on 3D image scanning, image processing, data visualisation and technologies for supporting visual impairment.

Usability and Educational Technology

Our Usability and Educational Technology Research Area investigates online virtual environments, image processing and data visualisation.

Semantic Web Technologies

Our Semantic Web Technologies Research Area is interested in open linked data, intelligent internet search and knowledge modelling.

Digital Electronics

Our Digital Electronics Research Area has a wide range of research interests including System-on-Chip, embedded systems, neuromorphic hardware / FPGA design, intelligent control, data fusion, pervasive healthcare, assisted living, energy harvesting, wireless communication, power conversion systems and electronic system modelling.

Activities, projects and partnerships

Members of our research group have participated in the following projects and partnerships.

  • Urban Living: Integrated Products and Services CR&D, "Hyperlocal Rainfall" (InnovateUK, £230,566.00) - we are working with the City of Peterborough on the ‘Future Cities’ project, 2015-2017.
  • Echo2Eco - This 1.1 million EU European project was completed in 2014.  We worked with three universities and five companies across Europe to develop a new high performance low cost acoustic absorber for use in new and existing buildings.
  • Knowledge Transfer Partnership with I-Dash Ltd. (St. Neots): 2009-2012. We collaborated with I-Dash Ltd to develop software for the the Software as a Service (SaaS) market. Value £137,000.
  • We have also undertaken other Knowledge Transfer Partnerships or Knowledge East of England Partners up to £130,000 with many local and national companies including Sovereign Installations Ltd, Glazing Vision, LMK Thermosafe, Papershrink Ltd, Calex Electronics.

Members of our research group have also organized the following:

  • ISIE 2017 - the 26th IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, Edinburgh, June 2017.
  • INDIN 2015 - the 13th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics in Cambridge in July 2015. Professor Marcian Cirstea acted as General Chairman.

Our research students

  • Finding a botnet needle in a virtual haystack.
  • A new method of Integrating and publishing in linked open data.
  • Conceptual development of a novel digital controller for optimised operation of a hybrid renewable energy system.
  • Optimizing search recommendations of long-tailed items by integrating secondary data.
  • Energy Harvesting on ’Body Area Network’ for IoT.
  • Contextual binding in face recognition: implications for eyewitness testimony.
  • A novel approach for Semantic Search.
  • A novel temperature controller design for potentially explosive atmosphere.
  • Cloud Computing Optimisation, using a Scala autonomous distributed management system.
  • A type safe apparatus executing higher order functions in conjunction with hardware error tolerance.
