HUCBMS 2017 Conference

Networking at HUCBMS 2017

On 6-7 September, 2017, our  Cambridge campus was host to the 25th annual Heads of University Centres of Biomedical Sciences (HUCBMS) conference.

The conference was led by Claire Pike, Deputy Head of Biomedical and Forensic Sciences, and organised by the Projects Team in our Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Almost 100 attendees from across the UK gathered to enjoy a busy conference programme covering three principle themes: Learning and Teaching Developments in Higher Education; Research, Innovation and Impact; and Internationalisation.

Talks from a prestigious group of invited speakers from academia and the public and private sectors included:

  • David Sweeney of HEFCE discussing the Stern Review and future REF
  • Charles Brasted of Hogan Lovells talking about the legal and political issues surrounding Brexit
  • Sam Meakin of DFE speaking about the TEF
  • Nick Hillman of HEPI on the future of UK universities.

Nine sponsor companies exhibited, updating delegates on the latest product offerings, from textbooks to virtual-reality headsets. Our delegates also enjoyed an entertaining programme of social events, including an evening punt and BBQ reception, and a formal conference dinner and ceilidh in the Old Hall of Queens’ College, University of Cambridge.

Along with HUCBMS, we'd like to express our gratitude to all of those who participated and helped to make the 2017 conference a wonderful event.
