Mental health in police forces

With overarching duties for the safety and welfare of people within the community, police forces are increasingly required to respond to mental health matters.

In collaboration with the police forces in the eastern region, PIER is undertaking a comprehensive research project designed to build on the knowledge and understanding that already exits, by analysing specific experiences that have occurred in the Eastern Region in relation to responding to mental health crises.

The research project consists of three inter-related work packages:

  • Interviews with police mental health leads
  • Interviews with NHS mental health practitioners
  • Conducting a scoping exercise to explore the measurement of mental health demand.
