Trained as a nurse in the 1970s, Susan has worked in a variety of clinical environments as a theatre practitioner, and non-medically qualified surgical assistant (Surgical Care Practitioner). She undertook her MSc at Leicester Medical School (part of the University of Leicester) where she studied beside pre-clinical medical students.
Susan is a volunteer for the Association for Perioperative Practice's Advancing Surgical Roles Special Interest Group and member of a Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's project group working to develop a faculty of perioperative practice.

Surgical Care Practice involves non-medically qualified practitioners (usually nurses or Operating Department Practitioners) being educated to a standard that allows them to substitute for junior hospital doctors.
