Professor Patrick Geoghegan OBE

Patrick has over 40 years of NHS clinical and leadership experience as a nurse, executive director and chief executive. He is known nationally and internationally as a leading champion for transforming health and social services and clinical leadership.

Background

He has been appointed by the Royal Society of Public Health as a Portfolio Holder for Mental Health. Patrick has also worked on a number of national and international decision-making bodies over the course of his career including: a former Prime Minister’s task force for an Older People’s National Service Framework, the NHS Health & Well Being Board chaired by Dame Carol Black, the East of England Commercial Advisory Board, WHO European Mental Health Review Group, Chief Nurse of England Policy Group and the National Mental health Employment Policy Group.

Patrick’s Passion for developing and supporting Strong Leadership within the Public and Private sector led him to work in collaboration with Yale University to develop the Yale Health and Social Care System Leadership programme which is sponsored by Health Education England. This programme has now been running successfully for 11 years with many of its participants successfully moving into key positions in the NHS and Social Care System.

In addition to his professional and statutory work Patrick has always been committed to supporting the voluntary and not for profit sectors. He established a charity which supports Mental Health development in Ghana and is currently involved in a project with the Ghana Mental Health Authority and Department for overseas Aid to refresh the Mental Health Strategy and introduce alternative community based models of care. He is currently the Chair of The Silver Line a new national charity in the UK which he founded with Esther Rantzen. The Silver Line aims to tackle the impact of Loneliness in Older People and has led to other development work on the issue of loneliness in the USA with AARP the largest not for profit in the USA supporting ‘Positive Ageing’. Patrick is also currently Chair of Values into Action; New Jersey, a not for profit organisation in the USA that supports delivery of Citizen Directed Support and Care.

Patrick’s work has been recognised by Queen Elizabeth ll who awarded him the Order of The British Empire (OBE) in 2005.

In 2010; as a result of his drive and dedication to academic excellence, Patrick was appointed as Visiting Professor of Mental Health and Social Care by Anglia Ruskin University. Additionally, in recognition of his considerable influence and experience of mental health issues. The Health and Well-being Academy for research at Anglia Ruskin University was named after him. In 2016 Patrick was appointed as Visiting Professor with the Business School at Pavia University in Italy, where he lectures to students in the medical and business schools on an annual basis.
