Lesley Drayton is a senior lecturer with over eleven years’ experience of teaching and supporting Adult Pre-registration nursing students within their three year nurse education and working with Registered nurses in continuing professional development with Anglia Ruskin University, HSHS and Homerton School of Health Studies.

Background

As a Registered Nurse with over fifteen years’ experience Lesley has worked in a variety of areas such as General Medicine, Neurology and specialised in Cardiology and was Ward Manager of Coronary Care and a Cardiology ward within a large teaching hospital. She has been a Senior Lecturer within the university setting for the past eleven years. Within this role she has been extensively involved in teaching and supporting learners undertaking the adult pre-registration nursing programme and Registered Nurses attending post-registration modules. Her area of interest is mentorship and has been involved in designing a successful online mentorship update. As an Education Champion for a large Trust she is responsible for working in partnership with the Trust to ensure mentors and learners are supported within their practice placement. She leads a team of senior lecturers and ensure partnership working with mentor updates, support sessions and student forums.

As the Course Leader for Adult Pre-Registration Nursing students at the Cambridge site Lesley is responsible for ensuring all students are supported in theory and practice. The student experience is paramount and to maintain this she regularly networks and meets with colleagues within the Trusts’ and University, to ensure student and mentor feedback is reviewed and changes made as necessary.

Lesley has carried out a number of research studies whilst studying. The focus of her primary research for her degree was clinical supervision. Following on from this she was very interested in student support in practice and mentorship and focussed her research whilst studying her Masters on pre-registration nurses’ expectations and experiences of mentorship and how they complied with the then new NMC (2006) standards for mentorship.

Teaching

Lesley is involved with supporting and teaching students within their three year nursing degree course. This consists of lectures, group work and clinical skills. Within this she is a personal tutor to two groups of students. She also supervises post and pre-registration nursing students with their undergraduate major project and post graduate courses.
