Dr Ebi Osuobeni

Deputy Head of Department

Faculty:Faculty of Science and Engineering

Department:Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences

Location: Cambridge

Areas of Expertise: Health, social care and medical innovation

Ebi is an experienced lecturer in optometry, studying and teaching internationally. His research covers vision anomalies, facial, human and animal ocular biometry and the effects of sickle cell disease.

Ebi has studied optometry in Nigeria, the UK and the USA. He has been a lecturer and Professor of Optometry at the University of Benin and an Associate Professor at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Ebi is currently the Deputy Head and Admissions Tutor of our department.

Ebi’s research interests include psychophysics, binocular vision, ocular and facial anthropometry, visual acuity chart design, ocular epidemiology and the effects of sickle cell disease on the eye.

Research interests

  • Aesthetic ophthalmic dispensing: optometrists correct refractive error mainly by prescribing glasses and dispensing contact lenses. However, there are very few scientific studies into the factors that inform the choice of spectacle frames. We are interested in studying the reasons for dislike of glasses by some patients and the willingness of others to embrace its use. We are currently investigating how facial shape inform the choice of spectacle frame shape
  • How spectacles affect the perception of facial attractiveness and the perception of some basic human emotion including anger, fright and happiness.
  • Human and animal ocular biometry
  • Facial and ocular anthropometry
  • Screening and binocular vision anomalies
  • Design, construction and validation of visual acuity chart design. We have designed, developed and validated visual acuity charts in the major Indian languages including Hindi, Gujarati and Punjabi. We are currently interested in designing letter and pictorial visual acuity for Arabic-speaking children
  • Visual and ocular effects of sickle cell disease – interested in studying how sickle cell disease affects the morphology and function of the eye including the development of refractive error

Areas of research supervision

  • Further insights into letter crowding: The role of contour interaction, contrast and gaze fixations
  • Design, construction and validation of new Indian language visual acuity charts
  • The relationship between corneal dimensions, central corneal thickness and intraocular pressure in adult Nigerians without glaucoma
  • The development of crowding in children
