Don has over 20 years of research experience, including six years of industrially-sponsored postdoctoral research, at Leicester and Sheffield Universities. He has also worked on collaborative research projects with Cambridge University and Addenbrooke's Hospital.
As a postdoctoral researcher, Don’s interests encompassed biochemical research (protein characterisation, and immunological techniques), photobiology (phytochome and plant UV receptors) and photosynthesis (IRGA, polarography, chlorophyll fluorescence and developing mathematical models of photosynthesis).
While at Anglia Ruskin, Don has worked on collaborative research projects with Cambridge University Department of Plant Sciences investigating the physiological, molecular and photosynthetic responses of plants to elevated ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation. He was also seconded to British Antarctic Survey for four months' field research, investigating the responses of endemic Antarctic flora to elevated UVB.
Don’s current research interests are in the genomics and proteomics of chlamydia, which is a collaborative project with Addenbrooke's Hospital and the Sanger Institute. He's also working on a collaborative research project with Dan Gordon (Anglia Ruskin) and Dr Richard Barnes (Cambridge University, Department of Medical and Veterinary Sciences) investigating the factors which affect the development of the 'plateau' at VO2max.
