Alison is a qualified nurse with a background in Cardiothoracic Critical Care. Having been part of the Critical Care Teaching Team she developed a passion for education which has led her to pursue the next stage of her career with Anglia Ruskin.

Alison’s nursing career has been focused within cardiothoracic critical care at Papworth Hospital caring for patients with a wide range of complex needs. Alison’s interest in this field of nursing led her to successfully complete the Critical Care PGCert at Anglia Ruskin in order to further develop and inform her practice. Keen to further her knowledge, Alison also gained her Mentorship qualification. Alison acted a pain link nurse for the Critical Care department, delivering teaching sessions, completing audits and attending relevant conferences. Similarly, Alison has endeavoured to expand her evidence based knowledge through her attendance at ACTA/SCTS conferences and BACCN study days.

Over the last 16 months of her career at Papworth, Alison was appointed to the role of Senior Staff Nurse within the Critical Care Teaching Team. As part of this role, Alison was involved in the induction and education of new starters to Critical care through the delivery of teaching on study days and clinical supervision. Other responsibilities included the ongoing training and competence assessments of all staff.

Research interests

  • Simulation based learning
  • Critical care nursing

Alison has a keen interest in the application of simulation based learning to all fields of nursing education and in particular to critical care scenarios which are high risk for human error. Her interest in simulation stems from a relevant lecture that she attended at the ACTA/SCTS conference in 2015. Since then she has visited the Ipswich Hospital simulation centre in order to gain an insight into the application of simulation to training in addition to undertaking Laerdal SIM-man training.

Alison will be a Clinical Skills Tutor primarily for the Nursing Associate course but will also be involved in the teaching of clinical skills on other undergraduate nursing pathways also. Alison is keen to complete her PGCert in Higher Education while in this role.
