All male team move one step closer to the Essilor Challenge Trophy

Three students from Anglia Ruskin University’s Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences have battled through stiff competition from fellow students to qualify for the finals of the Essilor Challenge, a quiz based event which encourages competition between teams of optical dispensing students from UK colleges and universities.

The series of quiz meetings are held at all the institutions that teach dispensing optics in the UK.  They are sponsored by Essilor, one of the largest lens manufacturers in the world.

The victorious team - comprising Ian Taylor, Jack Gregory and Alan Graham – pitted their knowledge against around 20 other final year Ophthalmic Dispensing Foundation degree students who attended the competition event.  The prize for the team was £100 cash. They now go onto the Grand Final to compete against the winners of the other colleges and universities.  The team that clinches the final wins an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas.

The winners will be decided at the annual conference of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) in October this year.

Commenting on the win, Paul McCarthy, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University, said:

"This competition is fabulous for the students as it challenges them on both general optics and specific product questions. It certainly helps them in the real world of dispensing optics."

"This year’s Anglia Ruskin team contains some very bright students who we hope will go on to shine in the finals."
