Anglia Ruskin University's RAG Society has got its Christmas fundraising off to a flying start by raising £1,340 for charity with a 'date auction' in Cambridge.
The 'Ragtastic Charity Auction' took place during November at the Academy at an event which saw the venue filled with tables, a stage and a catwalk. Societies and sports teams reserved tables and donated impressive sums of money for their favourite date 'lots'. The twenty boys and girls up for auction had all posed for the 2006 RAG Calendar, and the night served to introduce the 'months' to the Cambridge students.
The auction was boosted by the generosity of local businesses and restaurants. Meals for two, cinema tickets and other nights out were donated by Cambridge venues, making every 'date' more desirable. Other companies contributed raffle prizes and students parted with £122 in the hope of winning goodies including SU Gym memberships, jewellery vouchers, hair stylers, a DVD and sandwich toaster!
Every 'date' sold for at least £25. The maximum bid of the night was for Student Union President Sarah Spenser, who sold for £190.
RAG President Suzy Rendell was delighted with the funds raised and said:
All proceeds from the auction and the calendar sales are going to Breast Cancer Care, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation for testicular cancer.
Anyone who would like a calendar can come to the Cambridge Student Union office after 1 December 2005. Calenders will cost just £3.
