Leading academic states the importance of strong leadership in tomorrow’s NHS

Nurses of the future must be trained to develop courage, integrity and compassion in order to lead on the frontline of the UK’s healthcare system, according to a new book by leading academic Professor Ruth Taylor.

Current challenges facing the NHS, such as stretched resources and budget cuts, will mean strong leadership is ever more important to ensure the needs of the patient remain at the centre of care, according to Professor Taylor’s book The Essentials of Nursing Leadership.

The book, co-edited with Professor Brian Webster-Henderson, underlines how nurses are accountable for all they do and have opportunities every day to make a difference to people’s lives. It is hoped it will help student nurses to reach their potential as leaders.

It follows increased scrutiny on the NHS in the media. The Department of Health published a ‘high level’ report on the future of nursing and midwifery in the UK. From the 20 recommendations, effective leadership in nursing was a pivotal concern. A further review by Health Education England placed continued emphasis on the need for strong nursing leaders within the UK.

Professor Taylor is Dean of the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education at Anglia Ruskin University, one of the largest providers of Nursing and Midwifery education in the East of England. She is also on the executive team of the Council of Deans of Health, holding the Workforce and Leadership portfolio.
