University features in inaugural league table naming best universities in Europe

Anglia Ruskin University has been praised by its students for providing a high level of teaching and excellent learning facilities, placing in the top 250 in the inaugural Europe Teaching Rankings published last night by the Times Higher Education magazine.

The university has placed 201+ in the rankings, which analyses the European Student Survey carried out by Times Higher, in which students are asked to rate their institution out of 10 on a range of issues.

Anglia Ruskin scored particularly highly against median scores for other UK institutions for quality of learning facilities (8.3/10), access to learning materials (average score of 8.7/10), support for critical thinking (8.3/10) and for making it easy to contact lecturers and faculties (8.4/10).

The rankings are based on four key areas:

• How effectively the institution engages with its students;
• Whether the institution has sufficient resources and capacity to effectively deliver teaching;
• The outcomes for students;
• An inclusive learning and teaching environment.

In explaining its methodology, the Times Higher’s website states:

“The metrics, which focus on the student teaching and learning environment and student outcomes, have been designed to answer the questions that matter most to students and their families when making one of the most important decisions of their lives – who to trust with their education.”

Based on data from this survey, Anglia Ruskin also won the Datapoints Merit category at the recent Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards (THELMAs), for access to learning and the quality of its teaching facilities. This award focused on universities delivering learning facilities that are highly rated by their students, but are delivered cost-effectively.

Professor Iain Martin, Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University, said:

“This ranking is just recognition of all across our university who contribute to delivering an outstanding educational experience for our students. As we come to the end of our 25th year as a university we can rightly be very proud of what we have achieved.

“Our university and educational strategies place an outstanding education at the heart of Anglia Ruskin and it is great to see this acknowledged as we conclude our anniversary celebrations.”
