Anglia Ruskin University has announced a strong judo squad to compete in the British University and Colleges Championships this coming weekend.

The Championships, which are being held in Sheffield, will feature around 100 universities competing in 20 different sports, with the individual judo event taking place on Saturday 19 March and the team competition the following day.

Anglia Ruskin’s team consists of Danny Williams, the British No 1 in the U73kg category, Mike Stewart, Glenn Miller, British squad member Josh Plant and Nicolas Antolinos, who is a former member of the French junior squad.

Anglia Ruskin entered judo teams in 2009 and 2010, recording a highest placing of fifth in the team event. In the individual competition they won gold in the U100kg at “kyu” level in 2009 and last year secured bronze in the U100kg “dan” event.

Head coach Bob Challis said:

“Anglia Ruskin Judo Club aims to be a consistently medalling at the BUCS Championships year on year as we are one of the most competitive universities for judoka in Great Britain.

“Team Bath, from the University of Bath, have won the judo for the last eight years. They have been unbeatable and they are likely to have a very good squad again this year, but there are a number of strong teams competing in Sheffield and we will be one of them.

“As of September 2012 we will be one of only two universities in a position to offer full-time judo training – that’s 20 hours per week – to students who wish to reach their maximum potential in the sport. This will be provided through our link with Comberton Village College, which demonstrates our commitment towards community engagement.”
