Dr Kamel MB BS, PhD, FRCPath is Visiting Reader of Pathology at our School of Medicine. He's also a Consultant in Cellular Pathology at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, and actively leads the Pathology Department as well as having worked as the Head of the Department from 2011–2017.

Background

Dr Kamel has obtained vast experience in diagnostic pathology, with special interests in skin cancer, renal pathology and lymphoma diagnosis. Dr Kamel has good experience in academic pathology including undergraduate and post graduate teaching as well as cancer research. In 2017, he was awarded Visiting Readership in Pathology at the School of Medicine, Anglia Ruskin University.

Dr Kamel graduated in his MB BCh in 1990 from Ain Shams University in Cairo. He then moved to Finland with a research scholarship, where he completed a MD PhD in 1994 at the University of Oulu. Dr Kamel held several academic positions in pathology in Finland as Instructor, Assistant Lecturer, and Lecturer in pathology, at the medical schools, Universities of Oulu and Turku. In addition, Dr Kamel carried out cancer research and completed several original studies on genetic alterations in cancer. In 1997 he moved to London, as SPR and Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Pathology in the North Thames Deanery. In 2002 he successfully obtained FRCPath (Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists), and CCST (Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training), London Deanery. Since 2002, Dr Kamel has been working as a full-time consultant pathologist in leading hospitals throughout the UK.

Research interests

Dr Kamel has a very strong research background with 50 original papers published in leading medical journals. His research interests are:

  1. Novel Plasma Device with its application human skin
  2. Breast implants and post-implant associated malignancies. In vitro analysis of various types of implants on breast tissue
  3. Histological study of skin burns treated with INTEGRA Dermal Regeneration
  4. Genetic alterations in cancers and molecular biology of DNA damage and repair

Research technique expertise

  • Immunochemistry – immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. Different immunoblotting techniques
  • Molecular biology – in-situ hybridization, florescent in situ hybridization, Comparative Genomic hybridization (CGH), and PCR

Areas of research supervision

  • Genetic alterations/molecular biomarkers in skin melanoma with their prognostic significance
  • Genetic alterations/molecular biomarkers in mucosal melanomas with their prognostic significance
  • Histological analysis of skin tumours and correlation to tumour clinical behaviour
  • Implant associated malignancies, in particular lymphoma associated with breast implants

Teaching

Dr Kamel's teaching experience began in Finland and then further experience was gained in the UK. Dr Kamel has been involved in undergraduate medical education as well as post graduate pathology training. Dr Kamel has participated and organised teaching for medical students at the Universities of Oulu and Turku in Finland, the University of London, University of Bristol and University of Birmingham in the UK. Dr Kamel was also involved in preparing and presenting several lectures in general and systematic Pathology, Group Tutorials, Practical Microscopic Sessions and Clinical Case Studies with Post Mortem Examinations and has also taken part in preparing and marking undergraduate pathology exams. Dr Kamel has also been involved in teaching Junior Doctors and Registrars in Pathology and Surgery, in the subject of diagnostic surgical pathology, immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology, within North Thames London Deanery, West Midland Deanery and ICINI Centre, Colchester.
