'Advertisers often claim that beauty ideals, particularly the thin ideal for women, are 'natural' – that such ideals have remained constant across time and culture. In this talk, Prof Viren Swami, looks back at history, showing how beauty ideals have changed over time and how they continue to differ across cultures. Far from being natural, he will suggest that beauty ideals serve a purpose: shifting attention away from women’s real competencies on to superficial aspects associated with appearance, thereby blunting any movement toward gender equality.
