My experience on the 'Making Performance' module

Making Performance, one of the core modules of the BA (Hons) Performing Arts course, not only trained me as a performer, but made me explore the construction of a show, allowing me to discover what my place could be in a theatre company.

Exploring a future career

What strikes me most about this module is the opportunity to discover and develop skills by experimenting several roles in the production, such as assisting directing, stage managing, and other backstage roles. Needless to say, the course allows you to explore and deepen what could, later on, be your career path! The module provides a glance of what would be like to work in a theatre company. The process in Mr Burns presented itself as that glimpse of the professional field, from auditions to the running of rehearsals, to the management of a budget and promotion of the show.

Group and autonomous work

In Mr Burns, each and everyone's contribution and group work was key to the success of the show. We've learned how to incorporate our own individual ideas with the creative views of the group. Through mental and group exercises, we've accomplished a certain connection that allowed us to construct and deconstruct ideas that reflected both on our directing choices but also in our work as actors. It is important to note that this module is an accumulation of all we've learned in the course until now, and we are highly encouraged in doing autonomous work, and finding out what can we contribute to the ensemble.

Working as an actor

As for the actor's work, it was fascinating to discover the group's approach to the text and the form we gave it. There are sudden breaks of mood that create tension throughout the show. In one moment there is a merry and sometimes comical atmosphere to then be abruptly broken by a sense of danger or crisis. Through the techniques given by our director, we plunge into character development and invent backgrounds, motivations, obsessions and other traces of personality that form our role. It is very interesting to observe the relationships that are built between characters in this process.

Overall, in this module, the creation of a performance combines artistic, technical and a certain communal work, which are essential components for the professional field.
