In spite of having been single on Valentine’s Day all my life, this date has always been my favourite holiday. Here are my top 3 tips for making the most of it.
You may not be as excited as I am, you may even be feeling a bit low-spirited – this is why I gathered some tips to help you have a wonderful day (especially if you are single, too).
1. Spread the love
For me, Valentine’s Day has always been about celebrating and spreading the love.
Write cards to the people you love to tell them how much you appreciate having them in your life. This could be your parents, your best friend, or a teacher that has been a great help in the past.
Instead of having the thought 'I’m single' as your main focal point, try to focus on making someone else’s day special. Are your parents working like crazy and not having time to relax and enjoy their time together? You could prepare them a surprise dinner! Is one of your friends feeling terrible over a recent breakup with their partner? Take him/her on a date to show that you are there for them and there is more life after a break-up. These gestures would surely make you all feel much joy.
Whatever you decide to do, even if it is just sending a text message or a call, be spontaneous and kind and you will discover that you are surrounded by love.
Is there any better way for a university student to celebrate than to party? You could host a party for all your single friends and, as a group, list all the benefits of being single (let me give you a few to start: you don’t have to share your food and you can watch your favourite Disney movie and not being judge for that). As an alternative, you could just go to one party happening near you. It is a fun way of meeting new interesting people, but most importantly you can have a great time and see that you are not alone.
If you don’t have any plans or don’t feel like going out you can have your private party where only you are invited and can binge watch shamelessly your favourite series while eating your favourite food.
3. Treat yourself!
Loving ourselves is crucial to living a happy and healthy life. This day is the perfect opportunity to practise it: focus on your wellbeing and reward yourself for the awesome person that you are!
We should not let consumerism ruin the beauty of this date. Nonetheless, if you have been craving those heart-shaped chocolates since they were put up on the shelf or if flowers are your favourite thing in the world, then why wait for someone to get them for you? Give yourself a present for this Valentines’ Day. You deserve it!
