In my second semester of first year, I transferred from the smaller Peter Taylor building to the main block. I shared my kitchen with some great students from Brazil, who were on a year-long exchange and I still keep in contact with them now.
If you get the chance to share a kitchen with students from other countries, I would recommend having dinner parties to swap cuisines. I tried brigadeiro (chocolate truffles), pao de queijo (cheese bread) and feijoada (bean stew) to name but a few and I also cooked a roast dinner for eight people – the Brazilians thought Yorkshire puddings were a desert!
Another opportunity I would recommend is becoming an Accommodation Ambassador (which is a paid position). As a student, you run tours around the various halls for potential students and answer any queries they may have. It is a great opportunity to socialise and promote Anglia Ruskin University (ARU).
I was also a LAIBS (Lord Ashcroft International Business School) Intern as part of the pilot LAIBS Internship Programme in 2014. To secure the intern role you have to go through a rigorous interview process, which had been designed to give you mock interview experience for when you enter the world of work.
As a LAIBS Intern you have exclusive access to training days including presentation skills, networking, and team work and group work with external experts in their specialist field. Each intern is assigned a mentor from Business. My mentor was fantastic and we still remain in contact now, she has assisted with my CV, given me work experience and contacts in the tourism industry and has also provided advice on career steps after university. In addition to all of this, I made the most of this opportunity by doing as much work experience as possible; I worked at UCAS Fairs, Unifest, in the LAIBS Faculty office and as an Ambassador. I would recommend the opportunity to any LAIBS student as you gain new skills, contacts and fellow intern friends!
