Coming to university is not all about “work, work, work!” People ask “do you have a social life?” and I reply “Yes I do.”
It is important to gain the right balance between university work and social life as you do not want to fall behind and then stress about meeting deadlines. Having a social life is not a bad thing because it is good to take your mind off work and give your brain a rest so that you can be refreshed when revisiting or starting new work.
Finding that right balance can be hard, however. It is about having the willpower to sometimes saying no to going out when work has not been completed. The best way to get the right balance is to set realistic goals. Completing so much work each day or for a few hours over a couple of days will be more beneficial that sitting there for hours every day, because your brain will not function to the best of its ability and this is where you find yourself getting more stressed and frustrated. This could then put you off from doing your work.
By setting realistic goals, and having the right balance you will find yourself meeting the deadlines with no worries whatsoever, rather than leaving your work to the last minute due to socialising too much and then stressing to try and meet deadlines on time. This could also affect your grade as you may not be adding enough detail to your work by rushing it and leaving it to the last minute.
To ensure I have the right balance, I make sure I complete a certain amount of work before I go out and have fun with my friends because you want the hard work to pay off. Handing in late has consequences: no matter how good your work is, if you miss the deadline your work is capped at 40%. 12 weeks at university fly by and deadlines creep up on you sooner than you think! Be organised!
