Ever wondered what makes the sound of a Stadivarius violin so special? Officiando Nigel Brown, guardian of some the most historic (and valuable!) string instruments in existence, explains the technical construction of these gems, and surveys the technical development of the violin from the mid-sixteenth century to present day. Virtuoso Alicja Smietana is on hand to play appropriate music examples on a selection of instruments by Stradivarius, Guarneri and Camilli.
This performance is part of our Lunchtime Concert Series.
