Cambridge campus

Three characters from the film Suffragette and the wording

Suffragette (2015), directed by Sarah Gavron and featuring a cameo appearance by Meryl Streep as Emmeline Pankhurst, tells the story of fictional character, Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan), an East End laundry worker who joins the suffragettes only to pay the heavy price in the loss of her son.

While many viewers found the film deeply moving it has received a mixed critical response from critics and historians.

The screening starts at 6.30pm with a short introduction by Dr Deborah Thom. This will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by Dr Alison Ainley, and discussion and questions from the floor.

The panellists are Professor Lucy Bland, Dr Lucy Delap, Professor Mary Joannou and Dr Deborah Thom.
