ALSS Buddies - volunteering

ALSS Buddies is a voluntary mentoring scheme run by the Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences since 2016, in which current 2nd and 3rd year students help new undergraduate students settle in to university life. As a Buddy you will receive training in how best to communicate advice and help to our new students.

Remember how it felt when you first started University? This is your chance as an ‘Expert Student’ to share your experience of student life at Anglia Ruskin, answer questions and help another student make the most of their studies. We will match you up with new students according to your course, interests and hobbies (as far as possible) and provide full support to your role.

This is also an opportunity to enhance your own personal and employability skills, gain valuable volunteering experience and make friends. Our Buddies enable friendly peer-to-peer support, within a formalised scheme. This benefits both buddies and new students, building both confidence and autonomy and engagement with our faculty community.

You can apply to become a Buddy via our Surveymonkey application form, where you can also select a training date.

As an ALSS Buddy you will be expected to:

  • attend one training session (compulsory)
  • contact your allocated students(s) pre-arrival
  • meet your buddy on campus, or at an organised faculty event in Freshers' Week
  • contact your buddy at least once a week during Weeks 1-6 (by email or face-to-face)
  • be friendly, reliable, knowledgeable about our University, trustworthy and a good listener
  • complete an activity log during the scheme
  • provide feedback on your experience.

As an ALSS Buddy you will receive:

  • full free Buddy training
  • an opportunity to enhance your personal skills and meet new people
  • a Buddy T-shirt and drinks vouchers for meet-ups
  • Students' Union Volunteering Award Credits
  • Vice Chancellor’s Student Leader Award Credits
  • key transferable skills and experience for your CV (and a reference if required)
  • an ALSS Dean’s Award and gift voucher (on completion)
  • opportunities for other volunteering or paid work.
