ALSS Buddies - volunteering

Untitled Page

We are now recruiting Buddies for our September 2016 undergraduate student intake. You can apply using our application form.

ALSS Buddies is a voluntary scheme run by the Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences in which you, as a current Year 2 or 3 student, can help new undergraduate students get used to university life as easily and enjoyably as possible. You'll be fully trained and equipped with all the relevant information to become a great Buddy.

Remember how it felt when you first started University? This is your chance to share your experience of student life at Anglia Ruskin and help another student make the most of their start here.

But it's also an opportunity to enhance your own personal and employability skills, gain valuable volunteering experience and maybe even make a life-long friends. Our Buddies scheme will enable you to provide friendly peer-to-peer support and is not intended as academic mentoring. As far as possible, we will match you up with a new student based on your interests, hobbies and course, and provide full support to your role.

As an ALSS Buddy you will be expected to:

  • Attend one training session (compulsory)
  • Contact your student buddy 1-2 weeks before they arrive (we will provide a template email for this)
  • Meet your buddy at an organised event during fresher’s week, the ‘Buddy Meet & Greet’
  • Contact your buddy at least once a week during Weeks 1-4 (by email or face-to-face)
  • Complete a diary on your activities together and, after the scheme, provide feedback on your experience

As an ALSS Buddy you will receive:

  • Full free Buddy training (including a certificate on completion)
  • An opportunity to enhance personal skills and meet new people
  • Student Union Volunteering Award Credits
  • Vice Chancellor’s Student Leader Award Credits
  • Employability skills and experience for your CV
  • An ALSS Dean’s certificate and gift voucher (on completion)

Further information will be provided at our training sessions on either campus. For training dates, or to sign up, please see our application form.
