ARITI is delighted to welcome Dr M Hasan Shaheed, Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London.

Abstract

Design, modelling and control of Engineering Systems with particular focus on Robotics and Renewable Energy (RE) Technology will be presented in the talk. On the robotics side, Robotic Active Capsule Endoscope (RaCE) to be used for Gastrointestinal (GI) tract screening, Master-slave Robot Manipulator (MSRM) for remote handling, Robotic Retractor for assisting colorectal surgery and Solar-aerial Robot (drones) to be used for monitoring will be highlighted. On the renewable energy side, enhanced energy generation techniques from renewable energy sources such as PV, PRO and Wind Turbine using innovative configurations, hybridisation and control concepts will be presented. The talk will also include the application of hybrid RE technologies in desalination and water treatment. In addition, a way forward to research-teaching integration using research outcomes and prototypes will also be presented.

Biography

Dr M Hasan Shaheed is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Outreach and Recruitment at the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London. He has been pursing research in design, modelling and control of Robotic and Autonomous Systems and Renewable Energy Technology. Over the years, Dr Shaheed has published over 70 refereed articles including 14 during the ongoing REF period. He has successfully supervised 8 PhD students (5 in the current REF period) and 5 visiting fellows with research supported by the HEFCE, British Council, Newton Fund and the Niger Delta Development Commission. His current research team includes 6 PhD students and a PDRA. Dr Shaheed is a co-inventor of the 'first Helicopter (Solarcopter) in the world to fly by Solar Energy only’. In partnership with the National Bowel Research Centre (NBRC), Queen Mary University of London, Dr Shaheed received a QMUL Engagement and Enterprise Award for the development of a novel locomotion technique for a robotic capsule endoscope and a Barts Innovation in Healthcare Award for his research in robotic retractor for colorectal surgery. For his contribution in Energy research he was invited by the Eni Scientific Secretariat to apply for the Eni Award, 2016- the world’s most prestigious award in Energy. Dr Shaheed is a member of the IET, the IEEE and is a CEng.

For his outstanding contribution in knowledge dissemination, Dr Shaheed has received the Queen Mary Drapers’ Prize for Developments in Learning and Teaching and Queen Mary Drapers’ Teaching Fellowship. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is awarded a prestigious UK National Teaching Fellowship (NTF), 2017.
