Digital literacy

Digital literacy is defined as capabilities which allow an individual to live, learn and work in a digital society.

The Digital Literacy Framework defines the different digital literacies and levels. The Framework is informed and based on the EU Digital Competence (DIGCOMP) framework specification which has also informed Jisc's Digital Capability Framework.

Two areas we have been working on are:

  1. Digital Literacy Barometer We have collaborated with Dr Mark J.P. Kerrigan and George Evangelinos of the Faculty of Medical Science on the Digital Literacy Barometer which provides an opportunity for staff to assess their digital literacy competencies against established criteria. They can self-assess and use these results to develop their competencies.
  2. 5MoDL We run an online course 5 Minutes of Digital Literacy (5MoDL) in this area. The next course starts in October 2017. Please email us at to book your place.
