The journey so far and looking ahead

After many years using a home-grown virtual learning environment (VLE) the decision was taken in 2015/16 to move to a new learning management system (LMS).

Staff development and support programme

We’re currently running the following workshops designed to help you get started with Canvas. The below Canvas links require a login.

Canvas4Learning (3 hours) – this session explores how our LMS and other technologies can enhance learning activities before, during and after timetabled classes.

How to build a module in Canvas (3 hours) – this workshop introduces the basics of getting started with Canvas.

Explore Canvas (1 hour) – these drop-in sessions focus on key functionalities and questions you may have.

Further Canvas staff development – these workshops and online courses delve into more specialist Canvas functionalities, including:

  • Canvas Assessment (2 hours) – this workshop introduces different eAssessment tools in Canvas including quizzes, eSubmission, graded discussions and peer assessments.
  • Canvas Media (1 hour) – this workshop introduces different methods of using media in Canvas including creating videos with Canvas’s own tool, embedding YouTube and other videos as well as my player and lecture capture videos.
  • Canvas Collaboration (2 hours) – this workshop explores different forms of collaboration such as discussions, wiki pages, virtual classrooms, and group learning spaces.
  • Canvas Learning Analytics (1 hour) – this workshop introduces you to the data generated by a Canvas course which you can use to monitor students’ engagement with their learning in Canvas.

Professional services staff supporting students on Canvas (Canvas student support) (2 hours) – this workshop is for staff who need to support students using Canvas. The workshop will cover an introduction to Canvas from a student perspective.

Copyright and the LMS – this online course will inform you of the issues surrounding copyright and the LMS with advice on how to get the most from current copyright laws in the UK HE context, offer advice on how to avoid copyright infringement, provide tools and information that will help you find copyright free objects, and useful places for information and advice.
