After a 15 year career break to care for my children I was looking for a course that would directly increase my marketability in the workplace. With a background in health and social care my aim was to return to this sector, but within a research context. The MSc Research Methods in Psychology provided me with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate the core skills required by many of the employers involved in applied research. Modules on both qualitative and quantitative approaches gave me the opportunity to develop an overview of the research process as well as practical experience of putting together research proposals, interviewing and writing up a piece of work. I particularly enjoyed the emphasis on the practical application of key skills and knowing I had up-to date and relevant experience gave me, in turn, the confidence to apply for jobs in this area. I am now working as a research assistant in a university department that specialises in applied health research and am looking forward to developing my career in this context.
