Mentorship in Allied Health Care Practice

It relates to other Faculty delivered modules including the BSc Paramedic Science and the DipHE in paramedic Studies and furthermore has been designed to support you to develop your skills as a professional role model for the learners you support. It is designed to facilitate Practice/Paramedic Educators to develop, explore and apply the principles of teaching, learning and assessing in the practice settings. The Practice/Paramedic Educator’s learning will be facilitated within the University, using a blended learning approach which will include both VLE and taught sessions and supported within their workplace by a registered practitioner who is currently practicing as a Practice/Paramedic educator.

Practice based learning is an essential component of preparation for entry on to the HCPC register. The role of the Practice/Paramedic Educator is central to assist in students developing the values and aptitudes necessary to deliver skilled, compassionate and competent care (Compassion in Practice, 2012, Francis, 2013). Recognition of the importance of mentorship to the calibre and capability of the future healthcare workforce requires that aspirant Practice/Paramedic Educators are appropriately prepared for their role (Willis, 2012).

This course has been designed for a blended learning approach. Students will be facilitated to acquire the appropriate evidence based knowledge and skills to understand the process of supporting, and assessing learners within the workplace and carry out the role of mentor / clinical educator in their professional setting.
It’ll be taught through a series of lectures/tutorials/ online learning, all of which you need to attend and engage with (details of attendance requirements can be found in your Module Guide and on the virtual learning environment (VLE). Please note that before starting the course, you must have access to a learner. For the purposes of this module, a learner can be anyone who needs to acquire new knowledge and skills (with the exception of service users).
You should also make sure that you can attend and participate in all five of the structured study days, as attendance is necessary to complete the course.
