COPD Update

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common, preventable and treatable disease and it is estimated that more than one million people in Great Britain currently have COPD.

COPD symptoms include dyspnoea, decreased functional ability and exacerbations, which are particularly debilitating for sufferers. COPD results in high numbers of emergency hospital admissions, yet many of these can be avoided though improved disease management.

This workshop will provide you with:

• Review prevalence and the case for the so-called missing millions – BLF, 2006
• Refresh knowledge of national and international guidelines – NICE and GOLD
• Symptom management and non pharmacological management approaches, including breathlessness strategies, anxiety and depression
• An update regarding available pharmacological treatments, including review of inhaler devices
• Enhancing COPD self-management and empowering patients

• Improve efficiency – effective management of COPD improves quality of life for sufferers, whilst potentially saving NHS expenditure
